Typical care pathway

If you have any symptoms related to lung cancer, you should contact your GP for an appointment. If your GP has any concerns, then they will refer you to the hospital to be seen by one of our Specialist 月色直播s.

You will undergo tests so we can determine your diagnosis (please visit 鈥�Tests and investigations which may take place鈥� for more information on what these tests may involve).

Some tests will be carried out in Salisbury District Hospital and some will be in University Hospital Southampton, at our Cancer Centre.

Once your test results have come back, they will be discussed at a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting. This is when a group of specialists meet to discuss X-rays, scans, biopsy and blood results to determine your diagnosis, and together decide what the best treatment to recommend for each patient is.

After the MDT meeting, your diagnosis and their recommended treatment plan will be discussed with you and fully explained. Please also feel free to ask any questions you may have.

If you are comfortable to, we recommend you bring a family member, friend or carer with you to appointments as there can be a lot of information to process.听

Once treatment has been discussed and agreed to, every patient being treated for cancer will have an individual treatment plan.

After your treatment has finished, you will be put on a supported self-management follow-up programme, so we can monitor your progress. Please visit 鈥�Ongoing care鈥� for more information.

When will you be referred to lung/pleural clinic?

Typically, patients are referred by their GP/Hospital Doctor after being an inpatient on a suspected cancer pathway. This means that the person referred should ideally receive a diagnosis or ruling out of cancer within 28 days of being referred urgently by their GP.

What happens when you come into clinic?

You will be greeted by one of the Clinic Nurses in the department who will check your height and weight. They will call you through to meet the 月色直播 or their Registrar. There may also be a member of the Lung Specialist Team present. The Doctors may wish to examine you and listen to your chest as part of their assessment. They will then often suggest some further tests.

Some of these tests may be completed on the day:

Spirometry: a blowing test undertaken by one of the Clinic Nurses in the department.
Blood tests: you will be given a blood form and asked to go to the blood test department on Level 3 near the main entrance for this to take place.

Other tests may be requested and take place over the coming weeks.

When you come to clinic it would be helpful if you could consider any relevant information on the following beforehand:

Past Medical History - previous illnesses or operations
Regular medications - a list of prescriptions is useful
Family History - close relatives who may have had a diagnosis of cancer
Occupational history - exposure to cigarette smoke or asbestos

Getting to Medical/Surgical Outpatients

Medical/Surgical Outpatients is a standalone building opposite the Breast Unit (pictured far right, below).

By car:

Enter the hospital site at Entrance A. Park in car park 8 at the rear of the hospital.
Facing the hospital, cross over the road using the middle zebra crossing.
Once across, turn left and immediately right down the road, heading towards the Sarum Entrance.
You will soon see the Breast Unit on your left - Medical/Surgical Outpatients is opposite this.

By bus:

Leave the bus at the Springs Entrance (second stop).
From here, head towards the middle zebra crossing.
Turn right at the road immediately after this zebra crossing, (there are signposts to direct you).
You will soon see the Breast Unit on the left - Medical/Surgical Outpatients is opposite this.

If you enter the hospital at the Main Entrance (Level 3), follow the signs to All Outpatient Departments.

Getting to Oncology Outpatients/The Pembroke Suite

The Pembroke Suite is located on Level 3 at the Main Entrance to the hospital.

By car:

If you park in car park 2, enter via the Main Entrance and take an immediate left (opposite Marks & Spencer), you will gain entrance through the door on the right, along the back wall.
If you park in car park 8, once you enter the hospital go to Level 3 and go to the Main Entrance. Oncology Outpatients/Pembroke Suite will be on your right, opposite Marks & Spencer.听
If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and near the Level 2 entrance by Springs Restaurant.

By bus:

Leave the bus at the Main Entrance bus stop, enter the hospital here.
Take an immediate left (opposite Marks & Spencer), you will gain entrance through the door on the right, along the back wall.

Getting to The Pembroke Ward

The Pembroke Ward is along the hospital corridor on Level 3 of the North hospital building.

By car:

Park in car park 8 and enter the hospital on Level 2 near the Springs Restaurant. Head up the stairs or lift, to Level 3 and go towards the Main Entrance. The Pembroke Ward is along the hospital corridor, very close to the Main Entrance 鈥� you can follow signs to find it.
If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and near the Level 2 entrance by Springs Restaurant.

By bus:

Leave the bus at the Main Entrance bus stop, enter the hospital here.
Go straight forward, at the end turn left along the main corridor to find the Pembroke Ward on your left.

Getting to Pathology (if you need a blood test)

Pathology is along the hospital corridor on Level 3 of the North hospital building.

By car:

Park in car park 8 and enter the hospital on Level 2 near the Springs Restaurant. Take the stairs or lift to Level 3 and follow signage to the Main Entrance. Pathology is along the hospital corridor, very close to the Main Entrance.
If you have a disabled badge there is disabled parking by the Main Entrance and also near the Level 2 entrance by Springs Restaurant.

By bus:

Leave the bus at the Main Entrance bus stop, enter the hospital here.
Go straight forward, at the end turn right on the main corridor to find the Pathology area on your left. This is also where you will find the blood test department reception.

Transport/parking charges assistance

If you need help with transport, please discuss with Receptionists when making appointments.

If you need help with parking charges, please talk to the Receptionists on the Pembroke Unit who will advise.

Patients may also be dropped off at Main Entrance, Level 3 of the North building of the hospital.
